Shanti Primary School plans to hire a new teacher, teacher’s salary increased

Shanti Primary School in Ramche, Sindhupalchowk is making preparations to hire a new teacher for the school due to the increasing number of students at the school.

SSP is also creating a guideline for increasing the teachers salaries at the school to match the government standards. A mechanism has been created to evaluate the teachers salary every six months.

Shanti Primary School Receives Government Funding for a Teacher’s Salary

The District Education Office of Sindhupalchowk District has finally approved to pay the salary of one of the teachers at Shanti Primary School. This will go a long way towards ensuring sustainability of our school. The District Education Office has also nominated a resource person to monitor the school’s progress.

In the mean time, two of the teachers at the school are also receiving early childhood training as part of their professional development.

Now that Shanti Primary School is running smoothly, SSP has also began the research for our second project. Our team in Nepal has decided that instead of building a new school, we will focus on renovating existing schools. Over the last three years since our inception, we have come to a realization that the main problem in Nepal is not that there aren’t enough school – it that the school lack the proper infrastructure, the necessary resources and trained teachers. Therefore, we have decided to focus more on these three elements in the future.

Shanti Primary School Completes its first year of Operation

Even in its first year in operation, Shanti Primary School now has more students in Class 1 than any other schools in the area. See the the chart to the left for details.

Of the 25 students who completed the first year at the school. All of them have passed and will graduate to Class 2.

Students as far as the village of Arukharka, an hour walk from the school, are now coming to the our school primary because we are providing a better quality education than they can get in a nearby school.

SSP’s Project Coordinator had visited Ramche from May 10 to May 14 2009. The main purpose of this visit was to evaluate the school’s performance in its first academic year. During the field visit, PC visited the parents of the students and interviewed them. Our primary goal was to know if the parents are satisfied with the school and the overall performances of their children. PC also met with the teachers of Shanti Primary School and surveyed them about the performance of their students and their general feelings about the school.

We found that most parents were happy and satisfied with the overall performance of their children and the school as well. The teachers also shared a similar opinion. An evaluation report was created based on the interviews and shared with the related stakeholders. The following measures were recommended in the evaluation report to run Shanti Primary School effectively and successfully:

  • Quality education should be maintained in Shanti Primary School as almost all of parents believe that Shanti Primary School is providing a better quality education to their children than the other nearby schools.
  • Teachers training should be provided to the new school teachers.
  • It has been observed that some parents are admitting their children to Shanti Primary School in lower classes. The parent have a very high expectation about the quality of education we are providing. Such expectation need to be managed to a more realistic level to keep the parents happy.
  • A perimeter fence need to be built around the school for the safety of the school’s children.

The teachers of the school have also ask SSP to review the possibility of increasing their salary. SSP has come up with a mechanism to evaluate the salary requests every six months and meet it if it is deemed appropriate.
