The Background
The village of Ramche in Sindhupalchowk District did not have a school to serve its Tamang ethnic minority. When SSP’s founder, Christopher Heun, visited the village in 2003, he found out that many of the Tamang children were out of school because they were not able to keep up at government school due to their language barrier. Chris understood the need for a school that served the Tamang community in the village of Ramche.
The Need
The village of Ramche needed a primary school where the ethnic Tamang minority could send their children. The children needed to learn to speak Nepali and English along with learning other subjects like math and science.
The Solution
After making a promise to build the school in Ramche, Chris partnered with the Nationwide Scholarship Program (NSP) which had operated a mobile library program funded by the World Bank near Ramche. NSP signed on as the implementing agency for the school and the school’s construction began during the fall of 2007. The school began operating in May 2008 and by the end of its first year, it had over 60 students enrolled. As of May 2011, the school has around 100 students from pre-primary to the 4th Grade. The school employs four teachers and one administrative assistant.
