Mahakali Lower Secondary School Renovation Project

Mahakali Lower Secondary School Renovation Project

The Background
Mahakali Lower Secondary School, a school built in 1995, enrolls around 150 students from kindergarten to 8th grade. The school is located about a 90 minute walk from Ramche, the site of our first project, in a village called Maneshwara.

The Need
The school was in a serious need of renovation. The two-story school building had a leaky roof and there were several holes in the classroom floor. The balcony railing on the second floor was broken at several places creating a serious risk for the children. Many classrooms lacked furniture and the toilet needed repair.

The Solution
Funds for this project were raised in Austria by Rabindra Maharjan, a board member of Shanti Education Initiative Nepal. Around NRs. 400,000 (approximately $5,500) was allocated for the project. The most encouraging part of the project was the contributions by the local community. Not only did workers donate labor worth one-third of the total project cost, but the rusty zinc sheets that comprised the previous roof were sold to raise money as well.

The project was conceptualized in mid-2009; work started in November 2009 and was completed on schedule and within its budget in February 2010.
