Prasiddha Secondary School

Background:

Prasiddha Secondary School, situated in Manthali -7, Makwanpur district, was established in 1976. It has 260 students – 170 girls and 90 boys – and 12 teaching staff.

Need:

The school has recently relocated its buildings from Kadam Bhanjyang to Kerabari as the previous location was not very ideal for students to commute to the school. The old infra-structure, including the black boards, were of little use in the new set up. And the school did not have sufficient fund at its disposal to buy new white boards for its classrooms.

Solution:

The school requested us for the provision of white boards, markers and dusters for its classrooms. We discussed their need and decided to purchase ten white boards for the school to be set up in new buildings. And we have asked the school to buy markers and dusters.

The total program cost was NRs. 27,000 (around US$ 350). We provided NRs. 20,700  (around US$ 270) and the rest, along with the transportation cost, borne by the school.

The white boards have been delivered to the school on May 2, 2012.

Gupteshwor Secondary School

Gupteshwor School after construction

Introduction:

Gupteshwor Secondary School in Dhunge Sundar Pani, Nallu -3, Lalitpur District was established in 1960. It is in the hilly area to the south of the Kathmandu valley and around 20 kilometers away from the center of Kathmandu. There are nearly 250 students, mainly from the indigenous Tamang community, that are studying at the school up to grade ten.

Need:

Although it has four furnished buildings (eight rooms) it was short of classrooms and was awarded partial grant by the District Education Office to construct a two storied four room building.  With the grants from the education office and other sources, the school completed external walls and roof of the ground floor but there is no partition inside the building. There are no door and window shutter and the inside walls, floor and the ceilings are not plastered. The stairway leading to the first floor is not covered and when it rains, the ground floor where classes are conducted – at four corners – is flooded.

The school also lacks drinking water facility.

Solution:

We are helping the school to complete the furnishings and the partition of the ground floor, and install window and door shutters so that classes could conducted properly. We are also helping the school install a drinking water system.

Cost:

The total cost of the project is estimated to be NRs. 593, 400 (around US$ 8,000) with the community expressing their willingness and readiness to contribute 25 percent of the total cost of the project.

How long will the project take?

The project is expected to start from early March and is expected to end by the end of April.

The construction of the school building has been completed and handed over to the school management committee amidst a program held at the school premise on April 23, 2012.

Dhadkharka Primary School

classroom after the furniture provision

This project has been completed.

Dhadkharka Primary School built new classrooms but they did not have funds to buy furniture. As a result, the students have to sit on the floor. We are raising US$ 4,400 to help the school furnish its classrooms and provide other essential teaching materials. We plan to raise the funds over the next few months and begin work on September 1, 2011.

Background: Dhadkharka Primary School, established in 1990 with support from local government and locals, is situated in Dhuseni Shivalaya-8 of Kavreplanchok District. Dolalghat, its nearest town, is at a driving distance of two and half hours and is connected to the school by a seasonal road. During the rainy monsoon season, when the roads are unusable, it takes about seven hours to reach the school from Dolalghat.

Bhatte Primary School Renovation Project

Bhatte Primary School Renovation Project

The Background
Bhatte Primary School, established in 1984, has about 100 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is a 60-minute walk away from Ramche, the site of our first project.

The Need
The school currently has two blocks of classrooms. The first and the older block that was built more than 15 years ago is in a state of utter disrepair. During the rainy season the classrooms transform into a pool with water leaking from the old roof. The back wall is cracked at several places and could collapse any day. Due to this risk, classes are held in the field outside. Check out the pictures below for the conditions of the classroom.

Mahakali Lower Secondary School Renovation Project

Mahakali Lower Secondary School Renovation Project

The Background
Mahakali Lower Secondary School, a school built in 1995, enrolls around 150 students from kindergarten to 8th grade. The school is located about a 90 minute walk from Ramche, the site of our first project, in a village called Maneshwara.

The Need
The school was in a serious need of renovation. The two-story school building had a leaky roof and there were several holes in the classroom floor. The balcony railing on the second floor was broken at several places creating a serious risk for the children. Many classrooms lacked furniture and the toilet needed repair.

Shree Shanti Primary School

Shanti Primary School

The Background
The village of Ramche in Sindhupalchowk District did not have a school to serve its Tamang ethnic minority. When SSP’s founder, Christopher Heun, visited the village in 2003, he found out that many of the Tamang children were out of school because they were not able to keep up at government school due to their language barrier. Chris understood the need for a school that served the Tamang community in the village of Ramche.
