Narayani Higher Secondary School

Background:

Narayani Higher Secondary School of Gimdi, Lalitpur district was established in 1963. The school has 16 teachers and staff serving more than 400 students in nursery to grade 11. It is to the south east of Kathmandu, around 75 kilometers away, connected by mostly gravel road.

Need:

The school was recently relocated to where it is now as the previous place was not very suitable to operate a school. As the cement black boards fixed in the wall could not be moved, the school was looking for support in purchasing white boards to use in its classrooms. The school also lacked drinking water system.

Solution:

We are helping the school by providing  12 white boards to be used in the classes of nursery to grade 12. We are also helping the school in setting up water system so that children can use the water when they need it.

The total estimated cost of this project is NRs. 55,400, in words, fifty five thousand four hundred (around US$ 650) only. We will contribute around $ 500 while the school will bear the rest of the cost along with the transportation and fitting charges.

An agreement was signed with the school for the provision of white boards and the installation of drinking water system on January 10, 2013.

White boards and components required for installing a drinking water system have been delivered to the school on January 27, 2013.

Guru Lower Secondary School

Introduction:

Guru Lower Secondary School, in Bukhel village development committee ward number 1, Lalitpur district, was established in 1980. The school has 13 staff serving more than 200 students from nursery to grade eight. The school is around 40 kilometers away from Lalitpur ring road, Satdobato.

Need:

The school runs nine different classes – from nursery to grade eight. Hence it requires nine different classrooms to conduct classes. However, it has two buildings with eight classrooms. Taking into account that a room is allocated as a teachers’ room to conduct administrative activities, there are seven rooms available for nine different classes. Hence, the school is forced to conduct multi-grade teaching (having students from two grades) in at least two classrooms.

To address this, the Bukhel village development committee had provided assistance to the school to construct a two room concrete building. As the funds available was not sufficient to complete the building, the school could only finish up the frame for the building (see picture above) and classes cannot be conducted in this building yet.

Solution:

The school needs external support to complete the construction of two rooms in this building. The estimated cost of this project is around NRs. 400,000 (around US$ 4,600). The community has agreed to share a portion of the estimated cost of this project.

After the start of work, the building is expected to be completed within 3 months.

Jana Jagriti Higher Secondary School

Background

Jana Jagriti Higher Secondary School of Ikudol, Lalitpur was established in 1978. The school has 16 staff members serving more than 250 students. The school is around 50 kilometers away, on a gravel road, from Kathmandu.

Need

The school has constructed some new classrooms and was looking for financial support to discontinue the use of chalk inside the classrooms and replace it with the use of boards and markers. The school is also looking to add toilet compartments to be used by girls of the school.

Solution

The school approached us for help for the provision of white boards. We agreed for the provision of 14 white boards that would be used in all the classrooms. The total cost of the project was NRs. 42,000 (around US$ 500) with us bearing NRs. 31,800 (375 dollars) and the school footing the bill of NRs. 10,200 (125 dollars).

An agreement was signed with the school in this regard and the furniture were delivered on December 9, 2012.

We are seeking the funding of around US$ 5,000 for the construction of toilet in the school.

Thakursthan Lower Secondary School, Budhakhani

Background:

Thakursthan Lower Secondary School in Budhakhani, Kaverepalanchowk district was established in 1996. The school has eight teachers and staff serving more than 160 students. It is around 75 kilometers away from Kathmandu on metaled and graveled road and an hour of walking distance from nearby gravel road.

Need:

The school is conducting classes up to grade seven and is planning to upgrade to grade eight in the upcoming year. It has received a partial grant from the District Education Office, Kavrepalanchowk to complete a two room building. However, considering the future need, the school is planning to add a room to building. With the lack of financial resources, the school could not complete even the two room building.

Solution:

We are helping the school complete the two room building and add a third room to it. We will also be helping the school set up a drinking water system. The school will bear a quarter of the estimated cost of the project.

An MoU was signed with the school on December 2, 2012 and the work is expected to start from mid December and to finish by mid March.

Manikhel Lower Secondary School, Manikhel

Background:

Manikhel Lower Secondary School, Manikhel, Lalitpur district was established in 1980. The school has 7 teachers serving more than 170 students from nursery to grade eight. It is about 50 kilometers to the south east of Kathmandu.

Need:

The school has insufficient rooms to conduct all its classes. Hence it was awarded a partial grant by the District Education Office, Lalitpur to construct a four room building. But with lack of sufficient funds, the school was able to complete just the frame of the structure of the building – unable to conduct classes there.

Solution:

We are helping the school complete the construction of the ground floor of the building so that classes can run there. We are also helping the school to install a drinking water system. The school will bear a quarter of the estimated cost of the project.

An agreement was signed on December 4, 2012 to complete the construction of the four rooms in the ground floor.

Kali Devi Higher Secondary School, Pyutar

Background:

Kali Devi Higher Secondary School of Pyutar, Lalitpur was established in 1962. The school has 20 teachers and staff serving more than 360 students. The school is around 50 kilometers away from Kathmandu.

Need:

The school received a partial grant from the District Education Office, Lalitpur to construct a four room building. With the received grant and moblising other resources, including local, the school was able to complete only the frame of the building structure.
Classes could not be conducted in those rooms and the school was looking for resources to complete the construction of the building so that students should not be squeezed to smaller rooms.

Solution:

We are helping the school complete at least two rooms so that classes could be started there from the new academic session starting in April 2013. The school will bear at least a quarter of the estimated cost of the project.

Prasiddha Secondary School

Background:

Prasiddha Secondary School, situated in Manthali -7, Makwanpur district, was established in 1976. It has 260 students – 170 girls and 90 boys – and 12 teaching staff.

Need:

The school has recently relocated its buildings from Kadam Bhanjyang to Kerabari as the previous location was not very ideal for students to commute to the school. The old infra-structure, including the black boards, were of little use in the new set up. And the school did not have sufficient fund at its disposal to buy new white boards for its classrooms.

Solution:

The school requested us for the provision of white boards, markers and dusters for its classrooms. We discussed their need and decided to purchase ten white boards for the school to be set up in new buildings. And we have asked the school to buy markers and dusters.

The total program cost was NRs. 27,000 (around US$ 350). We provided NRs. 20,700  (around US$ 270) and the rest, along with the transportation cost, was borne by the school.

The white boards have been delivered to the school on May 2, 2012.

Devi Lower Secondary School

Devi Lower Secondary School has been forced to conduct some of its classes out in the open due to lack of adequate number of classrooms. We are helping the school complete the ongoing construction of a building by raising around US$ 9,000. A MoU has been signed with the school to complete its construction on May 15, 2012 and the building has been handed over to the school on August 6, 2012.

Introduction:

Devi Lower Secondary School in Nallu -9 of Lalitpur district was established in 1960. 219 students, 114 girls and 104 boys, are enrolled in classes from Kindergarten to grade eight.

Need:

The school has six classrooms to conduct classes for nine different grades. Due to inadequate classrooms and poor infra structure, the school has been conducting its classes out in the open. The District Education Office had granted the school a partial fund as per the former’s policy to construct a four room building to alleviate this situation. Due to lack of funds, the school has been able to complete only the basic framework.

Completed ground floor of the buidling

Solution:

We have agreed to raise funds for the school to complete the construction of the four room building. The project would construct external walls and partition the building into rooms, plaster the ceiling and the floor and paint the walls, doors and windows.

How much does it cost?

The school building construction is estimated to cost around NRs. 800,000 (around US$ 12,000). A quarter of the project cost will be borne by the school management and the local community with the rest being raised by us. The school has received a pledge of NRs. 75,000 (around US$ 1,000) from the Nallu Village Development Committee to complete the building construction.

Gupteshwor Secondary School

Gupteshwor School after construction

Introduction:

Gupteshwor Secondary School in Dhunge Sundar Pani, Nallu -3, Lalitpur District was established in 1960. It is in the hilly area to the south of the Kathmandu valley and around 20 kilometers away from the center of Kathmandu. There are nearly 250 students, mainly from the indigenous Tamang community, that are studying at the school up to grade ten.

Need:

Although it has four furnished buildings (eight rooms) it was short of classrooms and was awarded partial grant by the District Education Office to construct a two storied four room building.  With the grants from the education office and other sources, the school completed external walls and roof of the ground floor but there is no partition inside the building. There are no door and window shutter and the inside walls, floor and the ceilings are not plastered. The stairway leading to the first floor is not covered and when it rains, the ground floor where classes are conducted – at four corners – is flooded.

The school also lacks drinking water facility.

Solution:

We are helping the school to complete the furnishings and the partition of the ground floor, and install window and door shutters so that classes could conducted properly. We are also helping the school install a drinking water system.

Cost:

The total cost of the project is estimated to be NRs. 593, 400 (around US$ 8,000) with the community expressing their willingness and readiness to contribute 25 percent of the total cost of the project.

How long will the project take?

The project is expected to start from early March and is expected to end by the end of April.

The construction of the school building has been completed and handed over to the school management committee amidst a program held at the school premise on April 23, 2012.

Dhadkharka Primary School

classroom after the furniture provision

This project has been completed.

Dhadkharka Primary School built new classrooms but they did not have funds to buy furniture. As a result, the students have to sit on the floor. We are raising US$ 4,400 to help the school furnish its classrooms and provide other essential teaching materials. We plan to raise the funds over the next few months and begin work on September 1, 2011.

Background: Dhadkharka Primary School, established in 1990 with support from local government and locals, is situated in Dhuseni Shivalaya-8 of Kavreplanchok District. Dolalghat, its nearest town, is at a driving distance of two and half hours and is connected to the school by a seasonal road. During the rainy monsoon season, when the roads are unusable, it takes about seven hours to reach the school from Dolalghat.
