About Our Schools in Nepal

Founded in 2006, the Santi School Project first built a school in Ramche, a village in rural Nepal, where there was no school. We have a committed team of volunteers, staff, and board members, many of whom have been with us since the beginning. To learn more about our history click here.

In 2010, Santi School Project registered itself as Shanti Education Initiative Nepal (SEI Nepal) in Nepal. We strive to improve the standard of education in rural Nepal holistically by providing infrastructure support, resources and materials, and teacher training.

Infrastructure Support: Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and though primary education is free, most of the schools receive little government funding for infrastructure development. As a result, it is not uncommon to find schools with leaking roofs, cracked walls and missing doors. Teachers are forced to hold classes outdoors because of the unsafe conditions inside the classroom. Classes are often cancelled when it rains or when it’s too cold. Our organization has taken the responsibility to aid such schools in need.

Teacher Training: Unlike teachers in other parts of the world, teachers in Nepal receive very little training. Many become teachers fresh out of high school. Though the government attempts to provide some training, it is usually very inadequate and the teachers learn very little. We fill in this gap. We have partnered with organizations that specialize in teacher training and have provided high quality training for free to teachers who are eager to learn.

Providing Resources & Materials: Most of the schools in Nepal barely manage to pay the salary of their teachers. Therefore, most classrooms are nothing but rooms. Children learn by writing on the floor or just repeating what the teacher says. We believe that providing basics like books, blackboards and furniture for the classroom can make a huge impact on a child’s future.
